Reschenthaler Opposes Democrats’ Partisan Police Reform, Supports Bipartisan Solutions

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Guy Reschenthaler (PA-14) released the following statement on his opposition to H.R. 7120, the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2020. This legislation passed the House by a near party line vote of 236 to 181:

"Our government's most important job is ensuring the safety and security of the American people. Unfortunately, House Democrats' partisan policing bill would leave law enforcement unequipped and unprepared to deal with the dangerous or life-threatening situations they encounter every day. Ultimately, H.R. 7120 would keep cops in cars, rather than help build strong bonds between officers and the communities they serve and protect.

"I stand with President Trump and my Republican colleagues in pushing for bipartisan, commonsense solutions such as those in the JUSTICE Act, which I cosponsored. This proposal, introduced by my good friends Senator Tim Scott and Representative Pete Stauber, is a bipartisan response to calls for police reform, with over 80 percent of the policies in the bill supported by Democrats. By requiring agencies to maintain and share disciplinary records, improving officer training in de-escalation and duty to intervene, and ensuring transparency by providing additional funding for body cameras, we can empower good law enforcement officers and make our communities safer.

"Congressional Democrats should stop putting politics before the needs of the American people by bringing up partisan bills that have no chance of being signed into law. It is time to work together to achieve meaningful reform."
