Reschenthaler Statement on Support for Military and Government Funding, Ukraine Aid

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Guy Reschenthaler (PA-14) released the following statement regarding his vote in support of legislation to fund defense and other federal programs for the remainder of Fiscal Year 2022 and provide support for Ukraine:

“Our country is facing unprecedented crises at home and abroad. Inflation is skyrocketing, gas prices are at an all-time high, illegal immigrants and fentanyl are flooding across our open southern border, and President Biden’s weak leadership on the world stage continues to embolden our enemies and discourage our allies. Now more than ever, it is critical Congress provide our military men and women with the resources they need to protect our nation from foreign threats, while also ensuring American families and workers are taken care of here at home.

“The bill we passed today increases funding for our troops, border patrol, and national security programs and stops President Biden’s reckless spending and policy proposals. Critically, it maintains long-standing pro-life protections and provides much-needed assistance to Ukraine.

“I am particularly proud to have secured more than $10 million for nine community projects across Pennsylvania’s 14th Congressional District. These projects, which span all four counties, will improve the health and well-being of residents, make our communities safer, and spur economic growth.”

Background:

Reschenthaler advocated for the following priorities, which were included in the funding measure:

  • Defunding the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) – Prohibits federal funding from flowing to the WIV, the likely origin site of COVID-19.
  • Supporting Israel Provides $1 billion for Iron Dome improvements and $3.3 billion for security assistance.
  • Countering China’s Aggression – Includes $1.4 billion for military capabilities in the Indo-Pacific and $3 million to further strengthen the U.S.-Taiwan relationship.
  • Protecting Life – Maintains all existing pro-life protections, including the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits taxpayer money from being used for abortion.
  • Providing Mental Health Care for Law Enforcement Includes $8 million for Reschenthaler’s Supporting and Treating Officers in Crisis Act, which provides suicide prevention programs and supports to officers suffering from mental health issues.
  • Supporting Our Servicemembers and Their Families Funds a 2.7% pay raise for our troops.
  • Securing Our Border – Prevents the Biden Administration's plan to cancel $1.9 billion in border wall funding and increases funding for border protection and immigration enforcement.
