Reschenthaler Opposes House Democrats’ Attempt to Silence Conservative Voices
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Guy Reschenthaler (PA-14) voted against H. Res. 8, House Democrats' rules package for the 117th Congress that silences millions of conservative voices throughout the country. The resolution narrowly passed the U.S. House of Representatives by a party-line vote of 217 to 206.
"Despite Republicans' significant gains in the U.S. House of Representatives, Speaker Pelosi and House Democrats ignored the will of the people and started off the 117th Congress by narrowly pushing through a partisan rules package that upends decades of precedent to silence conservatives throughout our nation," said Reschenthaler. "The new rules gut Republicans' ability to speak on behalf of the Americans they represent and lay the groundwork for Democrats to jam through their radical socialist agenda and out-of-control spending. I strongly oppose this package and will continue to fight for southwestern Pennsylvanians to ensure their voices are heard in Congress."
Specifically, the resolution:
- Dramatically alters the motion to recommit (MTR), a right afforded to the minority for over 100 years to offer the last amendment to legislation.
- Exempts certain legislation from PAYGO requirements to facilitate the consideration of costly proposals like the Green New Deal and Medicare for All.
- Empowers Democrat committee chairs to unilaterally reissue subpoenas, allowing for the continued litigious obsession with the Trump Administration.
